SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – In celebration of the 2026 National Arts Month with the theme, Ani ng Sining: Katotohanan at Giting, the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco collaborated with Filipina international muralist and anthropreneur Ms. Venazir Martinez in holding an art workshop titled, “Weaving Nations – A Painting Workshop with International Muralist Venazir Martinez” held on 16 February 2026 at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center in San Francisco.

The workshop aimed to encourage participants to reflect on themes of home, belonging, and cultural identity through painting and weaving. It was attended by Filipino and Indonesian youth, as well as Filipino American participants, ranging in age from 9 to 36 years old. During the workshop, Ms. Martinez integrated the traditional art of banig or mat weaving with acrylic painting on canvas. Participants were guided to create two separate paintings–one depicting the Banaue Rice Terraces and the other the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge. She provided step-by-step demonstrations and instructions on basic color mixing, brush techniques, and the interplay of light and shadow.

Once the paintings were completed and fully dried, participants cut the canvases into strips and wove them together in the style of a banig. The resulting mixed-media artwork symbolized the interweaving of identities across borders, reflecting shared histories, migration, and cultural complementarity.

The workshop concluded with the presentation of participants’ artworks. The completed artworks will be exhibited at Kalayaan Hall and will be open for public viewing throughout the month of February.

Ms. Venazir Martinez is originally from Baguio City, Philippines and is currently based in the Bay Area. She was a recipient of The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) award for Arts & Culture in 2024. Aside from this award, her mural “Ani – Harvested Hopes”, a collaboration between the Renaissance Entrepreneurial Center and SOMA Pilipinas, San Francisco was awarded the Dream Big Award at the National Mural Awards 2025 held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Consulate reaffirms its commitment to promote Filipino creativity and artistry, particularly encouraging artistic expression among the youth and fostering cultural pride. END
