About the Book
DAUNTLESS tells the compelling and largely untold story of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments of the United States Army, formed during World War II.
Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 and the subsequent invasion of the Philippines, thousands of Filipinos residing in the United States volunteered for military service. Despite facing systemic discrimination at the time, these men chose to serve, driven by a deep sense of duty and a desire to help liberate their homeland.
From these volunteers emerged the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments, as well as highly trained and covert units such as the First Reconnaissance Battalion (Special) and the 978th Signal Service Company. These units carried out dangerous missions in the Philippines ahead of the return of Allied forces.
Through extensive research and personal accounts, Ms. Vallejo reconstructs the history of these soldiers, including the story of her own father, who served in one of these clandestine units. The book brings together narratives, analysis, and primary documents to preserve the legacy of these Filipino soldiers and their contributions to World War II.
