SF CARTOON ART MUSEUM CELEBRATES FILIPINO COMIC ARTISTS THROUGH THE “PINOY POWER” EXHIBIT

The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco, represented by Vice Consul Adrian Baccay and Cultural Officer Cristine Clasara-Steylaerts, toured a groundbreaking exhibit at San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum titled, “Pinoy Power! A Celebration of Filipino Komiks from the Archipelago to the Bay,” on 23 February 2024.

Cartoon Art Museum Executive Director Summerlea Kashar accompanied Consulate representatives during the guided tour of the “Pinoy Power” exhibit, which features works of Filipino and Filipino American comic book artists from the 1960s onwards. The first part of the exhibit recalls the first wave of talented comic book artists from the Philippines who were hired by American publishers such as DC Comics, including Alfredo Alcala, Alex Niño, Nestor Redondo, and Manuel Auad. The second part of the exhibit offers space for contemporary as well as up-and-coming Filipino American comic book and graphic artists, including Rina Ayuyang, Donna Almendrala, Lynda Barry, Martin Cendreda, Trinidad Escobar, Tintin Pantoja, and Bong Redila.

The “Pinoy Power” exhibit will run until April 2024 at the Cartoon Art Museum, located just behind Ghirardelli Square. (San Francisco PCG photos)
