SENTRO RIZAL HOSTS TURNOVER OF NINA DAZA-PUYAT’S BOOK “ANG ALAMAT NG LUMPIANG SHANGHAI” TO PH CONSULATE, SF PUBLIC LIBRARY
SAN FRANCISCO, USA – Sentro Rizal San Francisco hosted the turnover of the children’s book “Ang Alamat ng Lumpiang Shanghai” (“The Legend of the Fried Spring Rolls”) to the Sentro Rizal Library and the San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) on 9 June 2023. It is the first children’s book by food writer Nina Daza-Puyat, daughter of the late Filipino food icon Nora Daza.
Philippine Consul General Neil Ferrer thanked Ms. Daza-Puyat for her generous donation of “Ang Alamat ng Lumpiang Shanghai” to the Sentro Rizal Library and the SFPL.
“Through her latest venture, Ms. Daza-Puyat is continuing the legacy of her late mother, the legendary Nora Daza, of promoting Filipino food around the world,” Consul General Ferrer said.
The Philippine Consul General also noted the recent redevelopment of the Consulate’s Sentro Rizal Library, which is now home to around 1,500 Filipino books and other publications.
Following the book turnover, Ms. Daza-Puyat led a book reading session of “Ang Alamat ng Lumpiang Shanghai,” a fictional folktale in English and Filipino on the ubiquitous fried spring rolls. According to Ms. Daza-Puyat, the story of the main characters Pia and Prince Loom “demonstrates the good values that are innate in Filipinos such as charity, respect and care for the elderly, and helping others for the good of all.”
In San Francisco, Ms. Daza-Puyat previously organized reading sessions of “Ang Alamat ng Lumpiang Shanghai” at the Bessie Carmichael School in April 2023, and at Abacá Restaurant on 4 June 2023.
“Ang Alamat ng Lumpiang Shanghai” is the first children’s book of Ms. Daza-Puyat—who enjoys weaving make-believe stories about food, and believes that one’s love and respect for Filipino food and culture must begin at an early age.
Ms. Daza-Puyat is the author of the updated edition of “Let’s Cook with Nora” cookbook, and was the editor-in-chief of Appetite Magazine in the Philippines. END
