SAN FRANCISCO, 30 November 2023 – Philippine Consul General in San Francisco Neil Frank R. Ferrer met with Mr. Bing Tan, CEO and co-founder of Packworks, an e-commerce startup that helps micro retail stores called “sari-sari stores” thrive in the Philippines.
Packworks provides a business-to-business platform for sari-sari stores, connecting them to multinational companies offering fast moving consumer goods and enabling them to manage their enterprises through digital solutions.
Packworks was the winner of the Philippine leg of the Startup World Cup called Ignite 2022 conference, one of the largest startup gatherings in the Philippines. It has received funding support from Techstars, Asian Development Bank Ventures, CVC Capital Partners, Ideaspace and QBO, among others.
“I wish to congratulate Packworks in winning the regional competition of Startup World Cup in the Philippines and being able to participate in the Startup World Cup Finals in San Francisco,” said Consul General Ferrer.
“Your startup’s work is attuned to the theme of the recently concluded Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Week in San Francisco, which emphasized inclusivity and innovation, among others,” he added.
Tan said his platform connects micro entrepreneurs to the big companies and allows the entrepreneurs to manage their business in a more efficient manner and to further grow. He said that the platform will soon be available in Asian countries, such as Bangladesh, Cambodia and Indonesia.
“The sari-sari stores see us as kaagapay sa negosyo (Mom-and-pop stores in the Philippines see us as a support. Kaagapay means standing side-by-side to support someone),” said Tan.
Packworks participated in venture capital Pegasus Tech Ventures– organized Startup World Cup on 1 December 2023 in San Francisco.
With Tan were TechShake co-founder Fatima Yambao, who is also CEO and founder of software development company Digiteer, Melissa Pangan, president of a business process outsourcing company called Playqround, and Joel Madtha from a digital marketing company.
Joining Consul General Ferrer were Deputy Consul General Raquel R. Solano, Consul Vanessa Bago-Llona and Economic Section Assistant Jennifer Sto. Domingo. END
