Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco Commemorates World Autism Day
SAN FRANCISCO, 2 April – The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco commemorated World Autism Day and helped spread awareness on its significance through the use of various media and cooperation with Filipino American community advocates.
The Consulate General has displayed the official banner of the national celebration of the 14th World Autism Awareness Day on its social media (Facebook.com/PHinSF and @PHLinSF on Twitter) and its electronic screens at the Philippine Center. This year’s Philippine theme is “Empowerment and Equal Opportunity: Together we can create a kinder and inclusive world for Persons with Autism.” It echoes the United Nations theme, which is “Empowerment and Equal Opportunity: Together we can create a kinder and inclusive world for Persons with Autism.”
In cooperation with non-profit organization Autism Hearts Foundation (AHF), the Consulate General is displaying videos about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and AHF’s projects in previous years, including art exhibits at the Philippine Center’s lobby that feature the art works of children with autism, and AHF’s program, Fashion Arts Autism Benefits (FAAB). FAAB facilitates the training of student scholars guided by Filipino master painters and designers. Among the art works of children with autism included painting on pineapple fabric (piña) that are later on made into fashion items.
Consul General Neil Frank R. Ferrer is also participating in a virtual conference called Philippine International Autism Awareness Conference on April 16-18, 2021 by giving some inspirational remarks. The online event is described by its organizers as “a gathering for Filipino families and friends, allied health professionals, and lay service community leaders and which aims to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities (persons with ASD), to actively participate in our dynamic society.”/END
