SAN FRANCISCO, USA – Mayor London Breed enjoined San Franciscans to recognize the significant contributions of the Filipino American Community following her declaration of 12 June 2022, Philippine Independence Day, as Filipino-American Friendship and Heritage Day in the City and County of San Francisco.

In a proclamation presented to Philippine Consul General in San Francisco Neil Ferrer following the raising of the Philippine national flag at the San Francisco City Hall on 7 June 2022, Mayor Breed congratulated the Filipino people on the 124th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.

“San Francisco has a longstanding history of openness and respect for people of all backgrounds, and today, on the occasion of the Philippine Independence Day we particularly recognize the important contributions made to our city by Filipino-Americans,” Mayor Breed’s proclamation reads.

In response, Consul General Ferrer expressed his gratitude to Mayor Breed for the recognition the City has accorded to the over 700,000-strong Filipino American community living or working in San Francisco and the Bay Area. The Philippine Consul General also noted the longstanding sister city relationship between Manila and San Francisco which, for more than six decades now, has bolstered the economic, cultural and people-to-people ties between the Philippines and the United States.

Prior to the presentation of Mayor Breed’s proclamation by Interim San Francisco Protocol Chief Meron Foster, officials from the San Francisco City Government and the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco led the annual hoisting of the Philippine national flag at the Mayor’s Balcony of the San Francisco City Hall, in celebration of Philippine Independence Day.

Other U.S. government officials present during the Philippine flag-raising event include San Francisco Office of International Trade and Commerce Director Mark Chandler, U.S. State Department’s Office of Foreign Missions Associate Regional Director for External Relations Julio Garcia-Medina, and San Francisco Asian Art Commission Chair Fred Levin.

On 12 June 2022, the San Francisco City Hall will be lit up with the Philippine national colors of blue, yellow and red to cap off the celebration of Philippine Independence Day and Filipino-American Friendship and Heritage Day in the city. END
