Philippine Consulate and UPAASF Co-Organize “UP Connect Speaker Series: Pathways to Small Business Success”

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco and the UP Alumni Association of San Francisco (UPAASF), co-organized the “UP Connect Speaker Series: Pathways to Small Business Success,” bringing together Filipino and Filipino American entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and community stakeholders to explore the factors driving small business growth and economic contribution. Held at the Kalayaan Hall, Philippine Center on 13 November 2025, the event highlighted the innovation, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit that characterize the Filipino business community in the Bay Area and beyond, and provided a platform for sharing practical insights, success stories, and resources to support aspiring and established business owners alike.
The first panel, moderated by UPAASF President Letty Quizon, featured Ms. Juliana “Nana” Luz, Chairman and Co-Founder of Softype Inc., and Ms. Carol Gancia, Founder of Kokak Chocolates. Ms. Luz shared her journey leading a global technology company and underscored the importance of adaptability and purpose-driven leadership. Ms. Gancia recounted her transition from media production to building a chocolate brand rooted in Filipino flavors and values, highlighting how creativity, resilience, and cultural identity shaped her entrepreneurial path. Both speakers encouraged aspiring founders to pursue ventures that excite them, stay true to their values, and embrace change as part of growth.

The second panel, moderated by UPAASF Board Chair Rosario “Chato” Calderon, brought together Mr. David Hincapie, Lending Expert at the U.S. Small Business Administration; Ms. Katy Tang, Executive Director of the San Francisco Office of Small Business; and Ms. Anne Marie Kristine Umali, Trade Commissioner and Director of the Philippine Trade and Investment Center-Silicon Valley. They discussed a wide range of resources available to small businesses, including financing and lending pathways, mentorship programs, permitting and leasing support, and opportunities for Philippines-U.S. trade and investment collaboration. Panelists also addressed challenges faced by entrepreneurs, from export requirements to navigating regulatory systems, and highlighted the value of community partnerships and accessible government support.

The program concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the speakers and moderators, reaffirming the Consulate’s commitment to championing Filipino American entrepreneurship and strengthening the ecosystem that supports it. END
