PH CONSULATE IN SAN FRANCISCO DEEPENS SCIENCE AND INNOVATION TIES WITH DOST

Taguig City, Philippines — Consul General Neil Frank R. Ferrer, accompanied by Consul Rowena Pangilinan-Daquipil, met with Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary for Research and Development Leah J. Buendia at the DOST Main Building to explore deeper collaboration on science, technology, and innovation.

Usec. Buendia recalled her 2023 visit to San Francisco, which led to partnerships such as the DOST collaboration with AI-powered weather firm Atmo. They also discussed Philippine participation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and the importance of linking researchers and startups with industry.

She also shared DOST’s ongoing R&D efforts in sustainable technologies such as coconut-based oil absorbents, bamboo furniture, and electric vehicles.

The Undersecretary emphasized DOST’s commitment to linking researchers with industry partners early in the development process and outlined the Department’s support programs for local startups. She also discussed the recently approved National AI Strategy (NAIS Ph), which will guide the responsible use of AI in sectors such as disaster management, public health, and sustainable development.

Consul General Ferrer expressed continued support for DOST’s science diplomacy and reaffirmed the Consulate’s readiness to foster connections between Philippine R&D institutions and innovation hubs in the U.S. West Coast.

The meeting underscored shared goals in advancing research, promoting technology transfer, and elevating Filipino innovation on the global stage. END
