The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) launched a Filipino Christmas-themed cable car for the second year in a row.

SFMTA partnered with the Filipino American Arts Exposition (FAAE) in decorating Cable Car No. 17, built in 1887 and dedicated to the late Filipino gripman (cable car driver) Reynaldo Morante. FAAE members volunteered their time and resources to decorate the cable car before its roll-out on 29 November 2024. Among the Christmas decors used were #LoveThePhilippines ornaments from the Philippine Department of Tourism Office in San Francisco.

Cable Car No. 17 with Filipino Christmas decors will ply the Powell/Market Street-Fisherman’s Wharf route (via Bay/Taylor Street, and Hyde/Beach Street) until the first week of January 2025.

As a San Francisco innovation and icon, the cable car is especially popular among domestic and international tourists, and Cable Car No. 17 passes by tourist attractions such as Union Square, Chinatown, Lombard Street (“World’s Crookedest Street”), North Beach (Little Italy), and Fisherman’s Wharf.
