The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco hosted a presentation by Fil-Am historian and retired city planner Teresa Ojeda titled “Beyond Kearny Street: Locating Pioneering Filipinos in San Francisco 1900-1940,” at Sentro Rizal of the Philippine Center in San Francisco on 16 October 2024. Consulate personnel, led by Consul General Neil Ferrer, attended the presentation held in celebration of Filipino American History Month.

According to Ojeda, city directories, land use maps, newspaper clippings, and census enumeration records reveal that Filipino immigrants lived in various neighborhoods in San Francisco, beyond the ten-block area along Kearny Street in the downtown part of the city then known as the “Manilatown.” One of these neighborhoods is the South of Market Area (SOMA), which is now the SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District. They also actively participated in the city’s civic, cultural, and even political activities. Those who are interested in Ojeda’s presentation may reach out to her via email at [email protected].
