PH CONSULATE GENERAL IN SF JOINS 7 MILE HOUSE’S “ADOBO COOK-OFF FOR A CAUSE”

BRISBANE, CALIFORNIA, USA – As part of efforts to promote and mainstream Filipino food in the Bay Area, the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco took part in the 4th Annual “Adobo Cook-off For A Cause,” organized by 7 Mile House Historic Sports Bar and Grill in Brisbane, California on 30 October 2021.

The annual cook-off competition features the iconic Filipino dish of adobo to raise funds for a non-profit organization. This year’s beneficiary is the Pistahan Parade and Festival, a yearly celebration of Filipino culture in San Francisco led by the Filipino American Arts Exposition (FAAE).

Vice Consul Adrian Audrey L. Baccay served as one of the judges for the event, sampling an array of adobo dishes from five contestants in the hopes of bringing the best adobo to the table. Completing the panel of judges were Fil-Am Daly City Mayor Juslyn Manalo, and Fil-Am San Francisco Entertainment Commissioner and FAAE President Al Perez.

Filipino American Gloria Garcia won the Critics’ Choice Award for her home-style pork adobo, which used classic ingredients such as soy sauce, vinegar and garlic that give off a savory aroma.

Meanwhile, the People’s Choice Award went to Neo Veavea, an American Samoan who was taught by his mother how to cook adobo. He presented a sweet and savory version of the pork and chicken adobo.

“On behalf of the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco, I wish to congratulate 7 Mile House and its owner Vanessa Garcia, and all the participants in this year’s ‘Adobo Cook-off For A Cause. We capped off this year’s celebration of Filipino American History Month by taking pride in our history and culture, and sharing it with the rest of the community,” Vice Consul Baccay said.

7 Mile House has been an ardent promoter of Filipino food in the Bay Area. The restaurant offers its patrons a good selection of Filipino dishes such as adobo, sizzling sisig, chicken lumpia rolls, and ube cheesecake. Apart from the Adobo Cook-off, 7 Mile recently organized its “Ube Bake-off Challenge,” featuring the Philippine ube or purple yam. END
